Adventist student wins medal at Astronomy Olympics

Diogo Rodrigues da Silva (14), a student at Esteio Adventist Academy in Rio Grande do Sul, was among the three winners of the Brazilian Astronomy and Astronautics Olympiad (OBA). The test, for students from the sixth to ninth year of Elementary School in public and private schools, took place during the month of May.

The Brazilian Astronomical Society and engineers from the Brazilian Space Agency have been holding this competition for 21 years. This year it brought together over 700,000 students from more than 8,000 schools. In an interview with the newspaper Destaque, Rodrigues da Silva, the bronze medalist, reinforced his preference for the study of the celestial bodies, an essential factor for the result. “Although I know a little, I was surprised with the high result and with the achievement of the medal,” he says.

Rodrigues da Silva’s physics teacher, Tiago Walescko Chimendes, points out that the academy typically performs well in the competition. “The institution has won in the past, but this is the fourth consecutive year we’ve medaled. Our next goal is the gold medal. We are proud to already have the silver and bronze medals in our gallery,” he states.
