Seventh-day Adventist church members in Rwanda were applauded by a top government official for impacting their community through community service day. Harelimana Cyriaque, Minister of State in charge of socio-economic development in the Ministry of Local Government (MINALOC), commended group for contributing significantly in the development of the country.
Cyriaque highlighted this in the Kicukiro District on October 29 where thousands of Adventists gathered for community service work in the city of Kigali. The Adventists do the monthly community service the last Sunday of every month instead of Saturday, which is when other faith groups hold their community service.
“I am delighted to be with you Adventists as we do the community work of this month,” said Cyriaque. “When you take this precious time to do the community work, it is another pillar you are adding to the existing ones that build our country. I thank you for this.”
He added that you can’t put a price on the community service work the Adventists are doing. “Adventists have become the partners of the Government of Rwanda to bring the security to this place,” the Minister stated.
He explained people had feared to pass by the area where Adventists do their community work because it was a haven for bandits. But since 2003, when Adventists have started to remove the overgrowth, people no longer fear passing even at night while they are walking or jogging.
The Minister of State has also asked Adventists to help fight corruption, have a culture of conservation, along with cleanliness and hygiene. He urged them to plant trees in their homes as this month’s community work focused on tree planting.
Hesron Byilingiro, president of Rwanda Union Mission, thanked the government of Rwanda for having allowed Adventists to do the community work on Sundays. He reminded the members of Adventist Church in Rwanda not to take this opportunity for granted.
Others who joined the Seventh-day Adventist Church in this community work include the army, the 2 Vice-Mayors in Kicukiro District and the Advisor to the Minister of Local Government.
