Thailand has always been a Buddhist country. Often described as more a way of life than religion, Buddhism permeates Thai life and influences people’s conduct in so many ways. Over 95% of the Thai people are Theravada Buddhists. While other religions have long been tolerated here, the numbers are quite small; one million Muslims, 250,000 Christians and small groups of Hindus, Sikhs and others.
The Seventh-day Adventist movement first came to Thailand in 1919 through the work of two missionaries. From those humble yet challenging beginnings, there are now approximately 14,000 Seventh-day Adventist believers–14,000 among a population of some 66 million.
As you ponder those numbers and the challenges of mission, let’s travel to Kazan, Russia and visit a humble Seventh-day Adventist church.
